Stakeholder #1

CVS Pharmacy is predominantly a health company, but that sells anything from groceries, to cosmetics, to toys, to passports. Inside CVS, one can also purchase medications and receive over-the-counter drugs. This is the kind of carry-all company that one would go to if they weren’t sure if their local grocery store would carry it. CVS is such a prominent pharmaceutical chain, the second largest in the United States, that it is likely that anyone in any state has been to one of their stores. Although facts like these can be stated about CVS and it is generally known that these stores carry a wide variety of products, it is not usually the first choice for someone who is looking to go grocery shopping. The types of customers at CVS do not usually enter the store with the purpose of making a product haul, but rather to pick up that one thing that some other store didn’t have. In their online presence, CVS contains a website that customers can purchase products from. Similar to the physical store, its online counterpart is likely the last resort, and, even then, it is more probable that someone would revert to ordering off Amazon if their local CVS did not carry a product.

“[CVS] [is] helping millions of patients manage chronic disorders like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. And all of these conditions are made worse by smoking.”
  • This quote plays highly on our emotions and sympathies for people with chronic disorders and really plays CVS Pharmacy as the protagonist and smokers as the antagonists who relentlessly and thoughtlessly beat on people with these disorders.

“We just want to help everyone, everywhere, breathe a little easier.”
  • This quote is simple but really shows CVS's public purpose. This quote is extremely biased by being focused on the company coming to the aid of every person just by having discontinued their cigarette line.

“Tobacco products have no place in a setting where healthcare products are delivered.”
  • Although I agree with this, the quote made by CVS is really aimed against all other pharmacies to make themselves look better. What this quote is saying is that it, by its own guidelines, is now the only true pharmacy.

CVS pharmacy will have the most in common with its general customer base (smokers excluded), and the least in common with their smoking customers and the cigarette companies. Many customers will likely agree with the last quote the most, since it is more objective and not as focused on the heroism of the pharmacy. The smoking customers affected by the event could even probably agree with the first and third quote, but argue that the second quote promotes the company too greatly.
